Who Are Better Drivers: Men or Women?

Both men and women claim that the opposite gender is more of a danger on the road, but who really deserves the bragging rights of being the best driver? Obviously it is difficult to generalize about huge groups of people, but auto insurance companies do use gender to help determine their premium pricing structures. So do car insurers view men or women as better drivers–and who pays lower rates?

Research shows that female teenage drivers are twice as likely as male adolescents to be distracted by their electronic devices while driving; this includes texting, talking on the phone, or using another device such as an iPod.

Before men start gloating, however, they should note that male drivers have more DUI violations than women by three to one. And the most important statistic–who causes more accidents–lands decidedly in women’s favor. For every five car accidents, three were caused by men. In 2007, 6 million men were responsible for accidents, while only 4 million women were.

Insurance companies are well aware that women are safer on the road and therefore less risky to insure. They set their rates accordingly: on average, women pay $698 for a six-month car insurance policy, and men pay $765.
